The VHS Dilemma

JAVS has been leading the digital revolution in courtroom recording systems because we strongly believe it is the best way to manage and protect the public record. At the same time, we also have continued to offer and support traditional solutions such as VHS recorders.

Regrettably, the manufacturer of our JAVS VHS recorders has discontinued the product. We will continue to support and repair your equipment, but we can no longer offer replacements. Please take a moment to review this brochure for a few of the benefits of switching from VHS to digital. You'll find that digital systems will move your courthouse forward.

When you have digital records, the possibilities are endless. Stream live via the Internet for remote transcription, monitoring or education, send to a mass storage server, post to a Web site or provide copies to attorneys for an additional revenue stream.

You'll be well prepared for whatever the digital age has yet to offer. JAVS uses industry-standard Windows Media technology - not a proprietary software that makes you vulnerable to changes in the marketplace.

A blank VHS tape costs 85% more than a blank CD-R.

* VHS $2.24 ea Maxell Professional Grade
* CD-R $0.32 ea with a typical mailing label

If court were in session for 50 weeks per year and just three, six-hour days were on the record per week, the court would spend $672 on VHS tapes (2 copies/day).

The same court using CD-R would spend $96 (2 copies/day).

File Creation and Copies
It takes just five minutes to copy the digital record, including the log of events and up to six hours of audio and video, onto a CD-R. Each CD-R disc is a backup of the files stored on the digital recorder in the courtroom.

It takes six hours to copy one VHS tape.

Transcription and Review
The digital log is created with hyperlinks, which provide instant access to the case or phase of a trial that you would like to view instantly on your computer (similar to the “scene selection” on a DVD).

VHS uses the VCR counter and fast-forward and rewind to find an event on the tape to play.

Courthouses all over the country are experiencing storage space shortages. A CD-R in a slim case takes up one-fifth of the space of a VHS tape. JAVS offers additional storage solutions that require even less space.

Once the record is digital, the files can be transferred to a server to be streamed live via the internet, sent to a mass storage server or posted on a Web site for download. The possibilities are wide open in this digital age!
